HTC is taking on a brand-new category with a device that could give products like GoPro pause.

The HTC RE camera, first teased in a video in September, is a portable, durable camera meant to be used for everything from surfing to selfies.

HTC Americas President Jason Mackenzie took the stage at the company's "Double Exposure" event in New York today to introduce the RE camera, which he said is unlike anything else on the market.

The RE features special sensors that turn it on as soon as someone grabs it. A single press of its button takes 16-megapixel buttons, while holding it takes 1080p video.

It also features one other button for taking slow-mo videos, and the camera's wide-angle lens and stabilization features ensure you'll capture what you want despite the lack of a screen or viewfinder, Mackenzie promised.

Pursuit of brilliance

Mackenzie said the RE camera is designed to be "truly mobile." It doesn't need to connect to a PC to unload its content, as HTC has built a special mobile app for it.

He also promised frequent updates, an open SDK, and - eventually - live-streaming capabilities via a partnership with YouTube.

HTC began its event with a video about its "pursuit of brilliance," followed by HTC CEO Peter Chou taking the stage to explain why the event was called "Double Exposure." Suffice to say it had something to do with photography.

In addition to the RE camera HTC also revealed its new Eye Experience, with features like the "auto selfie," the HTC Desire Eye, and more.

"This is just the beginning of re-imagining HTC," Chou said.

The HTC RE camera will launch in four colors - white, teal, orange, and navy blue - through recamera.com, HTC.com and various retail partners "in time for the holidays," Mackenzie said.
